SCALLY

Scally is a piece that examines the emancipation of queer guilt through community and sex work. The play follows Stevie as he embarks on the tricky and confusing process of recovery- after an ongoing chem-sex addiction. To mirror the non-linear stages of recovery, the play skips back and forth- almost like Stevie’s fever dream. He can instantly flip from a moment of pride to embarrassment from the slightest trigger. After the constant messaging from society, Stevie’s managed to fuse together the world of sex work and addiction in his head and conflates the two as some kind of ‘dirty’ world to be ashamed of. However, with the help of an incredibly supportive mother and chosen family he realises that the only thing in his way is shame. Scally was written as part of the Soho Writers Lab and will be receiving and R&D this year.
